Beeville – Principal Annette Sanchez and her team sat glued to the computer screen, waiting and watching the announcer from the Flippen Group, as he welcomed them all to the Zoom meeting, sharing “We have called you to this meeting to share that you are all National Showcase Schools!” Moments later, there was confetti cascading from all around the room, as excited staff members celebrated the news that Hampton~Moreno~Dugat (HMD) Early Childhood Center had been named a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School, a first for the Beeville ISD Early Childhood Campus.
Capturing Kids’ Hearts is a transformative initiative for campuses to become emotionally safe and relationally connected places for students, staff, and parents to come alive with a love for learning. As part of the Capturing Kids’ Hearts program, teachers and staff learn processes to connect students with their peers and adults on campus and create classrooms where students are excited to enter and learn every day. Through experiential training, expert coaching, a character-based curriculum for students, and personalized support, Capturing Kids' Hearts equips professionals in K-12 education to implement transformational processes focused on social-emotional wellbeing, relationship-driven campus culture, and student connectedness.
Capturing Kids’ Hearts campuses were considered for these awards based on the following criteria: nomination based on observation, level of implementation of Capturing Kids’ Hearts processes by all staff as measured by online surveys, and data demonstrating that Capturing Kids’ Hearts has made a significant improvement in attendance, discipline, climate/culture, or academics.
A Flippen Group team visited each nominated campus to gather data and interview students, teachers, administrators, and parents. They used a matrix of key measurements to gather information during the campus walk-through. Finally, an additional survey was conducted to collect feedback regarding the perceived climate and culture of the campus and its conduciveness to learning. Following this visit, the selection team reviewed all data and selected the campuses to receive the Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools awards.
There is no better place to launch Capturing Kids’ Hearts than at HMD. The foundational development that occurs at the campus is essential to student learning and growth throughout their lives. The value, honor and distinction of being recognized as a National Showcase School is something that Principal Sanchez and her team hold dear. They see their students embracing their value and the value of others, encouraging transformational improvement as they grow into bold innovative leaders who will one day serve and lead the Beeville community with focused hearts.
The Capturing Kids’ Hearts program was provided by the district at the onset of the 2022-2023 school year across all campuses.
